History
Scientists
have only recently discovered the power of fragrance, but cultures around
the world have recognized it for thousands of years.
The perfume industry is
one of the world's oldest. The bible contains records of trading aromatic
herbs such as cinnamon, frankincense and myrrh. Ancient Egyptian physicians
treated emotions and mental health problems using aromatic plant oils.
After the fall of Rome, perfumes became rare and the medicinal use of
essential oils died out. But aromatherapy survived in the Middle East and
Europeans that traveled to the Holy Land found aromatic medical
preparations and perfumes. France would later become the world capital of
perfumery.
Modern research has
shown that some scents, such as lavender, increase alpha brain waves
associated with relaxation. Jasmine, on the other hand increases beta waves
linked to alertness. The US is now doing double blinded studies on many
herbs. Many of these studies have been completed and the results made
public. That is why we are now hearing so much about certain herbs and how
wonderful they are. However, around the world these studies were done a
long time ago. Doctors in Europe, China and France often recommend natural
remedies first and pharmaceutical remedies as the alternative.
It is easy to learn
about natural remedies. Just start slow and watch for late breaking news
regarding any healing that interests you. Then study more. Be careful to
check for any cautions that may pertain to any herb before trying. The
field of Aromatherapy is exciting and pleasurable at the same time. Bring
it into your life a little at a time. Peace will follow.
Methods
Discover ways
to access the restorative comfort and healing properties of fragrance.
Aromatherapy can enhance
a mood and relieve stress. The ancient therapeutic art of blending
essential oils or extracts distilled from aromatic flowers, plants, herbs,
and fruit for medicinal purposes has been part of the medical practices of
the world's great civilizations, including those of ancient Egypt and Rome,
for thousands of years because it works!
Use aromatherapy in body
or facial massage. Infuse the air surrounding you with fragrance. Place a
few drops of essential oil and water in a ceramic diffuser or potpourri pot
that is warmed by a candle. Drop a mixture of essential oils in a tub of
hot water for a personalized bath or sprinkle oil on a cotton handkerchief
and pull it out as needed, breathing in fully, deeply, and slowly to encourage
relaxation during the day. Burn incense when you meditate or light a
scented candle in your room to help you relax.
Lavender oil massaged
into your temples will take away a headache. Eucalyptus diffused into the
air as an inhalation of essential oils will ease respiratory congestion and
acts as an antiseptic. Basil stimulates the brain. Rosemary activates
memory. Peppermint provides mental clarity and sharpness. Sage acts as a
tonic for mental fatigue and strain.
Aromatherapy and
essential oils have been around for thousands of years. And now scientific
research has proven that these wonderful smelling substances are complex
and powerful with remarkable medicinal properties.
Technical
How Does
Aromatherapy Work?
As you inhale an aroma,
odour molecules enter your nostrils and drift up toward your olfactory
receptors. Once the receptors identify an odour, nerve cells relay this
information directly to the limbic system. The olfactory nerve cells are
the only sensory pathways that open directly into the brain.
The limbic system is a
group of deep brain structures that are involved in the sense of smell.
Here odours can trigger memories and influence emotions and behaviour. The
brain registers aroma twice as fast as it does pain. This is why the
inhalation of aromas can so powerfully transform the emotions. The limbic
system works with the nervous system, respiratory, circulatory and immune
systems of our bodies.
When you inhale
essential oils, they enter into your respiratory system as well as your
brain. In your lungs, molecules of essential oils attach themselves to
oxygen molecules and are carried into your blood stream and circulated to
every cell in your body. Within the cells, essential oils can activate the
body's ability to heal itself and improve health.
International scientific
research suggests that aromatherapy can increase productivity levels,
information retention and relaxation. Implementing aromatherapy into your
life is easy and feels so good. It not only strengthens your connection
with Mother Nature, it helps you to take the time to relax and enjoy life.
